Hoang Dang Nhuan
I have failed
I am failing
and I will forever fail
To me, art creation calls for a life of
sustained efforts; never do I feel completely
at ease or satisfied.

Few artists choose an uneventful death as
subject of their paintings.  One only relates
such death to discuss the significance of
life.  Hoang Dang Nhuan approaches death
in the manner of a Zen master: everything
originates from nothingness, and returns to
nothingness.  Nhuan recognizes the
ephemerality of life:  the apparent youth of
the subject emphasizes the point.  A person’
s lifetime possession and identity have no
significance.  The body eventually
decomposes and memories fade.  The bird
that sends the deceased away with a
farewell song may feed on the flesh.

Despite its spiritual the theme, the painting
does not lack sensuality.  The soft-colored
surrounding seems to caress the subject’s
body.  The horror of body decomposition is
carefully avoided and is merely suggested
by symbolic brushwork.  The mysterious
bird adds exotism to the painting.

Nhuan’s works often carry this combination
of the spiritual and the sensual.  The
spiritual component gives the paintings a
dreamlike effect while the sensual connects
the viewer to the artist’s world.
