Having been founded in 1905, Julliard has existed for over a century. When the school first opened it was known as the Institute of Musical Art. The original function of the school was to make the USA more competitive in the music world, and particularly with Europe. Julliard continued to expand, and in 1968 it added a Drama Division. It then became known simply as the Julliard School. The new function of the school was as a school of Performing Arts, rather than simply a music school.
